Košice will host the prestigious summer school of the European Association of Social Psychology

The Institute of Social Sciences of the Centre of Social and Psychological Sciences, Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, in cooperation with the University of Groningen, Netherlands, will host the prestigious summer school of the European Association of Social Psychology (EASP) for doctoral students in the field of social psychology. 

These summer schools are recognized as centres of excellence, offering an invaluable platform for budding researchers to gain knowledge, enriching experiences, and valuable connections.  In total, 60 doctoral students from 18 countries around the world will meet in Košice.

The EASP summer school will offer workshops led by experts in social psychology, each accommodating 12 students who will collaborate on research proposals. Facilitated by Hans Alves (Ruhr University, Germany) & Moritz Ingendahl (Ruhr University, Germany), the Workshop on Social Cognition explores attitude formation; Ruthie Pliskin (Leiden University, Netherland) & Islam Borinca (University of Groningen, Netherland) guide the Workshop on The Social Psychology of Violent Ethno-National Conflicts, examining conflict drivers and resolutions; Maja Kutlaca (Durham University, UK) & Soledad de Lemus Martín (University of Granada, Spain) lead the Workshop on Solidarity and Social Change, investigating allyship and collective action; Cameron Brick (University of Amsterdam, Netherland) & Karlijn van den Broek (Utrecht University, Netherland) facilitate the Workshop on Cognitions and Environmental Impact, applying psychology to environmental behaviours; and Yasin Koc (University of Groningen, Netherland & Jenny Veldman (Utrecht University, Netherland) host the Workshop on Reacting to Inequality: Sexual and Gender Identities, exploring the interaction of social identities with inequality and stigma. Marcello Gallucci (University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy) will offer a methodological workshop on multilevel data analysis and Sharon Coen (University of Salford, UK) will lead a 2-hour workshop on Research Ethics (online).

The summer school aims to support researchers at the outset of their careers, promote mobility, and facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, experiences, and valuable contacts. Additionally, the goal is to showcase our region and the local topics of focus. Invited lectures at the summer school will be given by Jozef Bavoľár (Department of Psychology, University Pavol Jozef Šafarik), who will discuss the Social Factors of Risk Perception, and Pavol Kačmár (Department of Psychology, University Pavol Jozef Šafarik), who will lead an interactive keynote on “An Unexpected Journey of a Young Researcher”. Barbara Lašticová (the Institute for Research in Social Communication, Slovak Academy of Sciences) will address Diversity Challenges in Social Psychology: A Critical Examination of EASP and Global Perspectives, and Anna Kende (ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary) will speak on The Challenge of Finding Adequate Psychological Tools to Combat Anti-Gypsyism. Ivan Ropovik (University of Presov) will provide a keynote on the topic of A Unified Framework for Statistical Modeling with SEM.

Our colleagues from the Institute of Social Sciences of the Centre of Social and Psychological Sciences SAS focus their lectures on these topics: Denisa Fedáková and Michal Kentoš will present the background of the European Social Survey, while Marcel Martončik and Matúš Adamkovič will lead a methodological seminar on responsible research practices and principles of open science. These two seminars will be streamed online and are open to everyone, not just participants of the EASP summer school.

The upcoming summer school, scheduled to take place on July 8 – 19 2024 in Košice promises an exciting convergence of knowledge, collaboration, and inspiration. With dynamic workshops, enlightening lectures, and meaningful discussions on the horizon, participants can look forward to an enriching experience that will ignite their passion for social psychology.
